The international forum "Caspian Sea - Sea of Peace and Friendship" will be held in the seaside resort of Avaza on August 12, the organiser of the event - the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan reports.
Representatives of five Caspian littoral states - Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, as well as Georgia and Romania, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, the International Institute for Law of the Sea Studies and the International Ocean Institute have been invited to the forum.
The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water not connected to the world's oceans. It is unique in that it preserves a variety of relict species of flora and fauna, including the world's largest herd of sturgeon fish.
Local experts told Daryo that there are a number of preconditions for possible pollution of the Caspian Sea.
Among them are the hydrocarbon exploitation in the sea, high population and industrial density in neighbouring territories, and intensive agricultural development of land in the valleys of flowing rivers.
