The Ministry of Economy and Finance has announced that the second season of participatory budgeting has started in Uzbekistan on July 17, Gazeta.uz has reported. People can propose projects to improve infrastructure, roads, schools and other facilities.
This initiative allows citizens to participate in the allocation of a portion of the local budget. The collection of proposals through the "Open Budget" portal will last for 20 days until August 6. As of now, over 1100 initiatives have already been submitted.
Following the proposal collection period, a special commission will review and select the proposals from August 6 to August 26. Subsequently, voting is scheduled to take place from August 26 to September 15.
Preliminary calculations indicate that more than $88 mn will be allocated from district and city budgets for this season (these funds will be increased by the end of the season).
It is worth mentioning that the voting for the initiatives of the first half of the year concluded on April 7. The residents of Uzbekistan cast a record-breaking 16.13 mn votes (approximately one-third of the adult population of the country) for 33,678 projects out of the proposed 55,970. A total of 1,666 projects were selected as winners, with $135 mn allocated for their funding.
Furthermore, as per the President's instructions, an additional $112 mn was allocated to finance 1,309 projects that received more than 2,000 votes each, but were not recognized as winners during the voting process.
