Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu of Kazakhstan held a meeting with European Union (EU) Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala on July 12 to discuss the progress of interregional cooperation between Central Asia and the EU. The meeting, which took place in Kazakhstan, aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and address relevant issues on the international agenda, regional security, and preparations for the upcoming Central Asia – EU Ministerial Meeting.
Nurtleu highlighted the significance of the meetings between Central Asian leaders and the EU, which were initiated by Kazakhstan in 2022. These meetings have helped solidify the focus on practical interregional dialogue and further institutionalization of cooperation. Nurtleu also emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration in developing the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route within the framework of the EU Global Gateway strategy.
Furthermore, Nurtleu expressed his support for the final study on sustainable transport connections between Central Asia and Europe, conducted and published by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This study holds great relevance in enhancing the connectivity between the two regions and facilitating trade and economic cooperation.
Hakala, who arrived in Kazakhstan to participate in the Central Asian Security and Cooperation Forum (CAF), reiterated the EU's keen interest in strengthening long-term cooperation with Kazakhstan. She specifically highlighted the EU's willingness to contribute to the sustainable economic development of Central Asia, including collaboration in the field of critical raw materials.
The discussions between Nurtleu and Hakala underscored the commitment of both Central Asia and the EU to deepen their engagement and cooperation. The forthcoming Central Asia – EU Ministerial Meeting, scheduled for the autumn, will provide a platform for further dialogue and the development of concrete action plans to enhance interregional collaboration.
