At a conference of women leaders in Bishkek, ombudsman Jamilya Jamanbayeva declared that urgent actions are needed to safeguard women's rights in Kyrgyzstan. She recommended giving mothers who raise children at home seniority.
"The level of domestic violence is very high and it is necessary to correct this, to eradicate stereotypes against women," Jamilya Dzhamanbaeva observed.
The Ombudsman suggested that Kyrgyzstan's labour legislation be amended as needed.
She noted that there are presently insufficient state crisis centres and information on the prevention of all forms of violence against women and children in Kyrgyzstan.
"Police officers should inform the public on a broad scale about the methods and types of protection available from state bodies," she said.
She advocated for the following steps to safeguard women:
- to include in women's seniority the time they were forced to quit work or were raising children;
- to provide equal access for men and women to all sorts of economic activity;
- provide circumstances to encourage women's employment in small and medium-sized enterprises;
- give interest-free loans for the establishment of small and medium-sized businesses;
- devise a plan to equalise job possibilities for women in rural and metropolitan regions.
