Kyrgyzstan may ban coal exports if coal mining companies increase prices, Deputy Chairman of the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers Bakytt Torobayev stated, as reported on the Kabar news agency website on July 7.
During a meeting of the Republican headquarters for preparations for the heating season of 2023-2024, he emphasised that,
"The people of Kyrgyzstan must be timely provided with a sufficient amount of coal at affordable prices."
During the autumn-winter period, the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant (TPP) requires 1.2mn tons of coal, with 550,000 tons to be imported.
In addition, 1.3mn tons of coal are needed for household consumption. The amount of fuel oil consumed by the Bishkek and Osh TPPs is 28,000 tons, and the amount of natural gas is 74 million cubic metres.
Approved plan shows that a total of 549 fuel depots should be opened throughout the country during the autumn-winter period.
