Ulan Japarov, the 32-year-old nephew of President Sadyr Japarov, has been arrested in Bishkek on suspicion of involvement in corruption schemes related to customs issues, Daryo's correspondent in Kyrgyzstan reports.
The president has demanded that legal action be taken against the suspects and that they fully compensate for any damages caused.
The president's press secretary, Erbol Sultanbaev, confirmed that Ulan Japarov is indeed the nephew of President Sadyr Japarov and stressed that accountability for corruption-related crimes is a requirement of the head of state.
"He was detained by the police. The case also involves private entrepreneurs and customs officers. I note that Sadyr Japarov previously warned that everyone, regardless of acquaintance and kinship, will be responsible for their actions according to the law," press secretary Sultanbaev said.
Ulan Japarov has been placed in remand prison #1 until July 26, according to the Pervomaiskiy district court. The investigation is being carried out by the Investigation Service of the Interior Ministry.
