The largest stone meteorite ever found in the CIS is stored in the National Museum in Ashgabat, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.
The meteorite fell on the territory of Turkmenistan in June 1998, 7 km south of the city of Kunya Urgench at 17:30 local time.
The meteorite, weighing almost a tonne and more than 4bn years old, is certified by the International Meteorite Society.
The resulting crater was five metres deep. According to eyewitnesses, soldiers from civil defence were called to the scene on alert.
The meteorite "landed" on the edge of a cotton field where people were working, a few tens of metres from a residential building, where fortunately no one was hurt.
"Years later, interest in the meteorite has not waned; it can be used to study the evolution of solar system."
