Iran has doubled its purchases of Turkmen gas, bringing them to 20mn cubic metres per day, Tasnim reports, citing Adviser to the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Sajjad Kashefi.
Turkmen fuel helps Iran solve the problem of energy supply in its northern provinces, which are significantly distant from national hydrocarbon resources.
Iran has signed a contract to import 10mn cubic meters of gas from Turkmenistan and the volume of gas import can reach 20mn cubic meters.
Since 2022, Iran has been receiving 10mn cubic metres of gas from Turkmenistan in a trilateral exchange involving Azerbaijan.
A local oil and gas sector source told Daryo that the latest contract provides for direct supplies, which were suspended in 2017 due to a $1.8bn debt accumulated in 2007-2008. Iranian media previously reports that Iran had recently repaid its gas debt to Turkmenistan.
Iran and Turkmenistan are linked by two pipelines that transported 30 to 40mn cubic metres of gas before the debt problem arose.
