Former Minister of Culture and Sports and former Director of the National Museum, Arystanbek Mukhamediuly, has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for corruption. The trial took place in Astana, and Mukhamediuly was found guilty of being part of an organized group that embezzled funds amounting to over $346,000. The funds were supposed to be used for the international exhibition project "The Golden Man's Procession through the Museums of the World," but no actual services were provided. Along with the prison sentence, Mukhamediuly has been banned from holding public office for life, and no property seizure was imposed.
Other individuals involved in the case, including Mukhamediuly's deputy Nurazkhan, the deputy director of LLP "E" Koshenov, and the accountant of the LLP Sadvakasova, have also been convicted. Nurazkhan and Koshenov, who were arrested during the investigation, have been sentenced to 7 years in jail. Sadvakasova, on the other hand, was arrested in the courtroom after the verdict was read.
Mukhamediuly has been in detention since May 2022 and faced charges of abuse of power and embezzlement on a large scale. The funds in question were allocated for various projects, including the international exhibition and the digitization of the national film collection. Despite efforts by the former official's family to interfere with the proceedings, including an incident during the convoy, the trial concluded with the sentencing of the defendants.
