Kazakhstan's Ministry of Culture and Sports has recently published a report on the most popular tourist destinations in the Central Asian country, as reported by Zakon.kz. The report identifies the top five cities that are most frequently visited by tourists, providing valuable insights for those interested in exploring the country's rich cultural and natural attractions.
Almaty is considered the most popular city in Kazakhstan for tourists due to its ski resorts, picturesque nature, pleasant climate, and welcoming locals. In fact, it attracts the highest number of visitors in the country. In the first four months of the current year, 1,185,130 individuals have already explored the charms of this southern metropolis.
Astana is the second most visited city in Kazakhstan. It's not just an administrative center, but also a popular tourist destination. In the first four months of 2023, over 951,750 people visited the capital. The Ministry of Culture and Sports is currently supporting the construction of Bozok, the largest open-air museum in the country, which is expected to become Astana's main tourist attraction.
Shymkent ranks among the top three cities for tourism due to its exceptional hospitality. In the first four months of this year, the town welcomed 346,280 visitors. Tourists have plenty of options for leisure activities, from visiting historical sites to unwinding in sanatoriums or attending cultural and sports events frequently hosted in the city.
Atyrau is the fourth most popular city in Central Asian country. It's also becoming a top destination for tourists. In fact, over 305,460 people visited the city in the first four months of 2023 alone. Recently, the Ministry of Culture and Sports opened a visitor center called "Saraishyk" in the region, which offers an opportunity for tourists to learn about the history of the Kazakh Khanate, the Golden Horde and earlier eras. As summer approaches, the number of visitors is expected to rise even more.
Aktau, located by the Caspian Sea, has claimed the fifth spot among the top tourist destinations. This year alone, Aktau welcomed over 220,000 visitors between January and April. With a surge in tourism of up to 20% during the summer months, the city is becoming the center of attraction in the Mangystau region.
Between January and April of 2023, approximately 3.5mn individuals traveled within Kazakhstan, marking a 36% increase from the same period in the previous year. The Ministry of Culture and Sports has implemented a number of initiatives aimed at promoting domestic tourism, such as the Kids Go Free program, which allows Kazakhstani citizens to plan affordable family vacations within the country and save up to 30% on tourist packages purchased through tour operators.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Kazakhstan has experienced an 11% increase in tourist traffic since the advent of 2023 compared to last year. Furthermore, the number of travel agencies has significantly risen.
