Reports about the dwindling water level in the Toktogul reservoir, the largest electricity generator in Kyrgyzstan, have sparked concerns among citizens. As of June 14, the reservoir holds only 9 bn cubic meters of water, compared to 11 bn cubic meters on the same date last year. The worrisome decline has raised fears of potential power outages during the winter months.
In response to these concerns, the press service of "Electric Stations" has provided clarification regarding the situation. The decreased water level is attributed to a combination of factors, including a dry and cold spring. Furthermore, high electricity consumption during April and May, surpassing the previous year's figures, has contributed to the strain on water resources.
However, the company assures the public that the situation is expected to improve. With the rise in temperatures, snow and glaciers are beginning to melt, replenishing the reservoir with additional water. This positive development is anticipated to alleviate concerns over potential power shortages.
The Toktogul reservoir plays a crucial role in meeting Kyrgyzstan's electricity needs, serving as a primary source of hydropower generation. Its capacity to produce electricity significantly impacts the country's energy stability and ensures a reliable power supply to households, businesses, and public institutions.
As authorities and energy officials closely monitor the situation, efforts are being made to mitigate the potential impact of the low water level. Strategies include implementing energy-saving measures and raising public awareness about the importance of responsible electricity consumption.
These concerns coincide with protests over water access in Bishkek on June 7.
