The Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan has sentenced the former president, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, to ten years in prison in absentia for corruption in the Kumtor gold mine case, TASS reports.
The Pervomai District Court of Bishkek issued the decision, which also includes the confiscation of Bakiyev's property and a three-year ban on holding public office. This adds to his previous sentences, resulting in a total of 30 years in a high-security prison.
Maksim Bakiyev, the former president's youngest son, was also implicated in the Kumtor mine corruption case. He has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, and his assets have been seized.
Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted from power in 2010 during a coup d'état. He fled Kyrgyzstan and currently resides in Belarus.
Despite multiple extradition requests from Bishkek, Minsk has consistently rejected the requests.
