The house of Afghanistan's Ambassador to Tajikistan, Mohammad Zahir Agbar, was burned down by the Taliban in the Rukhin district of Panjshir. The fire, which started on June 11, continues to rage, causing significant damage to the building. The house was originally constructed using financial assistance from Ahmad Shah Massoud, an Afghan Northern Alliance leader and a key U.S. ally against the Taliban.
Ahmad Shah Massoud, who briefly served as defense minister in the government of Burhanuddin Rabbani, had to retreat to the Panjshir Valley after the Taliban seized control of Kabul. The valley later became a stronghold for anti-Taliban forces.
Despite the destruction of his house, Ambassador Mohammad Zahir Agbar remains resilient. He stated, "The house may burn in the fire, but our spirit and will, will not."
This incident is not an isolated case of attacks on the houses of anti-Taliban opposition figures in Panjshir. In January 2023, the residence of Fazl Ahmad Manavi, the Minister of Justice of Afghanistan and a member of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, was also targeted and burned down by the Taliban. In both instances, the Taliban reportedly prevented local residents from extinguishing the fires.
