The African Mission to Resolve the Russia-Ukraine War has proposed that hostilities should be halted as a first step toward negotiations, according to Vincent Magwenya, a representative of the President of South Africa, DW reports.
This initiative, supported by six African countries, suggests that talks can begin without the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territories. However, Ukraine's ambassador to South Africa, Liubov Abravitova, opposed this proposal, stating that negotiations cannot take place until Russian forces leave Ukrainian territory within internationally recognized borders.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, on behalf of Zambia, Senegal, Congo, Uganda, Egypt, and South Africa, presented the peace initiative in mid-May. Ramaphosa intends to send delegations to Russia and Ukraine for discussions, and both Moscow and Kyiv have agreed to meet with representatives from the African countries.
It is worth noting that South Africa abstained from voting on a UN resolution urging Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine. This has led some Western countries to view South Africa as a close ally of Russia in Africa. Furthermore, US Ambassador Ruben Brighetti accused Kazakhstan of supplying weapons to the Russian army.
