Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently stated in an interview with Bloomberg that Ukraine cannot achieve victory in a war against Russia.
He pointed to factors such as the military balance, and the lack of NATO's willingness to deploy troops, and concluded that Ukraine is unlikely to succeed on the battlefield.
Orban expressed his belief that Russia can only be compelled to end the war through an agreement with the United States. He expressed his preference for Donald Trump to win the upcoming presidential elections, and despite his disagreement with President Biden, he criticized openly criticizing the United States as detrimental to business.
During his speech at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, Orban mentioned that his government had deviated from the European Union's stance on Ukraine following Russia's invasion of the neighboring country last year.
Hungary is currently blocking a €500mn financial aid tranche from the European Union to Ukraine. Orban has been opposed to imposing new sanctions on Russia, citing disagreements with the Ukrainian government.
It is worth noting that Hungary has been among the few NATO members that have declined to supply weapons to Ukraine for its defense against the Russian invasion. Critics of Orban argue that his call for the European Union to cut funding to Kyiv is essentially a demand for capitulation to Russian aggression.
