Turkmenistan is increasing its gas supplies to Azerbaijan through Iran, according to Hossein-Ali Mohammad-Hosseini, director of integrated planning at the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC). The gas swap has doubled, he said, speaking at a panel discussion at his office.
Ashgabat is a significant player in the region's energy market and began supplying natural gas to Azerbaijan early this year.
This arrangement allowed Iran to receive Turkmen gas from Serakhs and supply it to Astara, Azerbaijan, solving the energy supply issue in Iran's northern provinces, which are distant from the country's gas fields.
The contract is open-ended, with the parties initially agreeing to transport up to 2bn cubic meters of gas, before deciding to double the volume.
Azerbaijan purchased 858mn cubic meters of natural gas from Turkmenistan for $110.8mn in 2022.
