Turkmenistan is the largest supplier of electricity to Kyrgyzstan (through Uzbekistan), as it was a year earlier, Taalaibek Baigaziyev, chairman of Kyrgyzstan's National Energy Holding, told reporters.
Turkmenistan supplies the most electricity - about 1.6bn kilowatt-hours (kWh), he cited these figures during a press conference in Bishkek.
Kazakhstan, for its part, has supplied more than 0.5bn kWh between January and April 2023. Russia is contracted to deliver about 500m kWh this year.
Kyrgyzstan generates most of its electricity from its own electric plants, which produce about 14.5bn kWh annually. Domestic electricity consumption, however, has been growing, and it is expected to increase to 17bn KWh this year from 16bn KWh a year earlier.
Uzbekistan, the region's traditional power supplier, cut off shipments to Kyrgyzstan last year because of growing domestic demand brought on by the industrial boom.
Kyrgyzstan began buying Turkmen electricity in August 2021. Ashgabat also sells the energy to Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan, and plans to expand into the Caucasus (via Iran) and South Asian markets (via Afghanistan).
Turkmenistan's Energy Ministry earlier said that in 2022 energy exports will increase to 9.0bn kWh, up from 7.5bn a year earlier. Total electricity production in Turkmenistan is scheduled to reach 37.5bn kWh in 2028, up from 28.4bn in 2021.
