The Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan convened a meeting on May 19 to discuss the upcoming presidential election scheduled to be held ahead of the original timeline. During the meeting, the budget for the preparation and conduct of the early presidential election was approved.
The budget allocation for the election process was detailed, indicating that 19.8% of the total funds from the state budget were saved from the previous election of representative bodies in 2019, while 26% were reserved for the 2021 presidential election, and 13.5% were allocated for the 2023 referendum.
In accordance with the Election Code requirements, the Central Election Commission prepared an expense estimate of $15.2mn for the early presidential election. This amount reflects a 41% reduction compared to the budget allocated for the previous presidential election.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that 11% of the allocated funds for election financing, amounting to $1.7mn, would be used for all-party events, election campaigns, and the promotion of candidates nominated by political parties.
The majority of the budget, nearly 82%, is allocated for organizing the activities of district and precinct election commissions. Within this allocation, 76% of the funds are designated for compensation payments to the members of these commissions, most of whom are teachers, doctors, and active citizens.
To prepare for the 2021 presidential election, Uzbekistan had allocated 26.2mn, while the expenses related to the recently held referendum at the end of April were estimated at $15.9bn.
