The Agency of Preschool Education and Mercy Corps worked together to conduct a three-cohort training program for preschool nurses from the Surkhandarya Region and the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The program was held at Tashkent's Center for Advanced Nurses Training from March to May 2023, the press service of the US Embassy to Uzbekistan reported on May 18.
Mercy Corps provided a simulation center, resources for practicing first aid, and a classroom area for theoretical and practical learning. The training covered important topics related to early childhood health, such as personal hygiene, identifying signs of illness, assessing the severity of children in emergency conditions, preventative healthcare such as vaccines, healthy eating habits, and recognizing signs of child abuse. In addition, the Red Crescent Society of Uzbekistan provided two full-day sessions on first aid.
The importance of collaboration and sharing information with parents to promote the well-being of preschool children was emphasized.
Shahlo Makhsumova, a nurse from preschool No. 9 in Kumkurgan District, expressed her gratitude to Mercy Corps during the March training cohort. She hopes to use the knowledge and skills she gained to contribute to the healthy development of the children in her care.
'We are very grateful to the international NGO Mercy Corps for organizing this training from March 10 to March 18 for the preschool staff - nurses. During this training, we gained a lot of knowledge and skills. Many thanks to the trainers for this too. We hope to use the knowledge we have learned to contribute to the healthy development of the ‘little stars’ [children] of our country', Shakhlo Makhsumova told the media.
Mercy Corps, in partnership with the Agency of Preschool Education, implements the USDA-funded McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition program at state preschools in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and the Surkhandarya region.
The program aims to improve the technical base and infrastructure of state preschools in rural areas, contribute to the development of children's early literacy, healthy lifestyle, and hygiene skills, and provide trainings for teachers, nurses, and cooks to promote their professional growth.
