On the sidelines of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan held talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, reaffirming the commitment of both parties to advancing strategic, multilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed pressing global and regional challenges in the lead-up to the 80th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly. President Mirziyoyev expressed strong support for the Secretary-General’s reform agenda aimed at strengthening international peace, stability, and adapting the UN system to today’s realities.
Both sides noted positive momentum in Uzbekistan–UN relations, highlighting the effective implementation of 160 joint programs and projects across diverse sectors. Particular emphasis was placed on following through with agreements reached during Guterres’ visit to Uzbekistan in July 2024.
President Mirziyoyev also emphasized Uzbekistan’s active role within the UN framework, noting that 13 General Assembly resolutions had been adopted at the country’s initiative in recent years.
The leaders welcomed key developments in bilateral cooperation this year, including visits by heads of UN agencies such as UN-Habitat and UNICEF, the opening of the UN Women office in Tashkent, and the joint organization of a civil service forum. Additionally, Samarkand is preparing to host the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, marking a major milestone in cultural diplomacy.
Uzbekistan's progress in sustainable development was also recognized, with the country entering the top five globally in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index. In a move to further this progress, both sides plan to sign a new five-year cooperation program focused on achieving the SDGs.
The meeting also addressed broader regional dynamics, including efforts to strengthen integration in Central Asia and promote Afghanistan’s inclusion in cooperative development initiatives.
Concluding the talks, President Mirziyoyev and Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed their mutual commitment to deepening practical collaboration and expanding the scope of joint programs for the benefit of both Uzbekistan and the international community.
Earlier, speaking at the UN General Assembly, the President of Uzbekistan emphasized the importance of creating equal opportunities for landlocked countries to engage in the global economy.
