Increasing shipments of Turkmen natural gas to regional energy markets will be on the agenda of the forthcoming Central Asia-China summit in Xi'an (China) on 18-19 May. According to the state news agency Turkmen Habarlary, Turkmenistan's participation essentially provides the energy component of the partnership of states in this format.
The information says that the parties are discussing the construction of the fourth branch (D) of the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline, which would pass through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
"The route was chosen at the request of Bishkek and Dushanbe, which are in need of energy resources. The new pbranch D is expected to transport Turkmen gas directly to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as well".
China, for its part, would increase its purchases to 65bn cubic metres annually. Between 2009 and December 2022, Turkmenistan delivered more than 350bn to that country through three pipeline branches that transit Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
