In January-April 2023, 14,200 citizens from neighbouring Turkmenistan visited Uzbekistan for tourism purposes, according to the Uzbekistan's State Statistics Commitee.
Overall, more than 2m foreigners visited Uzbekistan, with Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Turkey among the top five countries.
Turkmenistan, whose citizens need visas to cross the border, ranked sixth. Official Ashgabat decided to withdraw from the CIS visa-free agreement in 1999.
The common border with Uzbekistan is the longest for Turkmenistan, at about 1,700km, with about 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks living in Turkmenistan and about 200,000 Turkmen in Uzbekistan. The two countries are seeks to increase cross-border trade.
