The United States and Turkmenistan will form a working group on methane mitigation and will endeavor to feature outcomes by upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP-28) in Dubai (UAE).
This is according to a US State Department press release following the ninth round of United States-Turkmenistan Annual Bilateral Consultations in Washington.
Methane is a climate threat 80 times more potent than CO2.
"The United States and Turkmenistan stated their intentions to cooperate on deploying leak detection and repair solutions as well as develop a methane reduction investment plan in 2023 to control methane emissions in the oil and gas sector."
Turkmenistan is one of the key energy suppliers in the region. The fuel and energy sector accounts for most of the methane emissions caused by human activities.
Local experts told Daryo Turkmenistan is working to increase recovery of associated gas and reduce natural gas losses during extraction, transportation, storage and processing.
