Turkmenistan is committed to further expanding the traditionally friendly, strategic Turkmen-Uzbek partnership, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said this in a message to his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the occasion of the referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The active participation of the citizens of Uzbekistan in the referendum, is a clear indicator of full support for the state policy implemented by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the letter said.
Berdimuhamedov expressed conviction that the basic law would further contribute to Uzbekistan's progressive development.
Over the years of Mirziyoyev's presidency, mutual trade between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan has grown considerably: last year it totalled $926.3mn, five times higher than in 2017. This is because Uzbekistan has switched to direct purchases of electricity and natural gas from Turkmenistan.
The 1,650km border with Uzbekistan is the longest for Turkmenistan. Ashgabat and Tashkent are working to establish a common trading house.
