Turkmenistan will pardon 463 convicts who sincerely repented of their crimes, in honor of Gadir Gijesi, the Islamic world's holy Night of Omnipotence during Ramadan.
This was announced at a government meeting, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.
"We carry out noble measures to release them from further serving of sentence, guided by the principles of mercy and humanism of our great ancestors," President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said.
The local administration was instructed to take care of the employment of pardoned citizens.
Berdimuhamedov wished the pardoned "with diligent work to make a worthy contribution to the large-scale activities carried out in the country, to serve their Motherland and to enjoy the fruits of their conscientious work."
The UN is implementing a project in Turkmenistan aimed at creating jobs, including for former prisoners, in order to protect them from the temptation to switch to marginal and illegal professions.
