The State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan reports that over 1,900 citizens of Turkmenistan visited their country in March 2023, compared to 1,500 in February and 1,400 in January.
In the last five years, 119,201 tourists from Turkmenistan have visited Azerbaijan.
It should be taken into account that citizens of Turkmenistan need visas to cross the border because the authorities of this country decided to withdraw from the CIS agreement on visa-free travel back in 1999. In addition, a specific part of the working-age population of Turkmenistan uses tourist visas to travel for seasonal work - to Russia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
However, the most popular destination is Turkey. Fifteen years ago, Ankara unilaterally introduced a visa-free regime (up to 30 days) for citizens of Turkmenistan. Still, it was abolished in September 2022 at the request of Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Daryo previously wrote that as of January 2023, 115,143 natives of Turkmenistan had residence permits in Turkey.
