A memorial service for Ogulabat Berdimuhamedova, who died April 7 at the age of 85, was held at all of the country's mosques, the Turkmenistan TV channel reported.
She is the mother of the national leader and head of the Khalk Maslakhaty (People's Council), Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov - known by the title of Arkadag (Patron) - and the grandmother of incumbent President Serdar.
The main events took place at the capital's Hezreti Omar Mosque, where the Berdimuhamedov family gave "sadaqa-agzachar" (ritual alms) in honor of Ogulbat.
The report said that Arkadag had previously written a book titled "Mother Worship - Worship of the Sacred". During the sadaqa, he said his mother Ogulabat-eje , like his father Myalikguly aga (who died in April 2021 at the age of 88), departed for eternal peace during the holy month of Ramadan, which is considered "the grace of the Almighty".
Sharing memories of his mother's childhood, he said it was during the war years.
"Children of those years had to endure hunger. Then the Ashgabat earthquake (1948) caused massive destruction. It was a big shock for them. But no matter how many difficulties they had in life, they endured all the hardships with pride and courage. Thus, their difficult way of life became an example for future generations".
Serdar Berdimuhamedov said that "the Turkmen people extol the sanctity of parents and family.
Turkmen television reports that Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed gratitude for the many condolences received from citizens of the country as well as from foreign leaders.
