In 2021-2022, law enforcement agencies in Uzbekistan received 72 thousand of domestic violence complaints; more than 61 thousand (85%) were related to discrimination against women.
With the new law, based on the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women in the final recommendations of the 6th periodic report of Uzbekistan on the establishment of separate criminal liability for domestic violence, another administrative and criminal liability was established for family (domestic) violence.
Suppose a husband or wife prevents their spouse from exercising their rights or insults, threatens, or separates them from close relatives. In that case, they will be held administratively or criminally responsible, depending on the severity of the act.
For example, if a person insults and demeans the value of his spouse, he will be fined UZS 6mn; if he beats her with malicious intent and inflicts severe injury on her body, he will be deprived of his liberty for 12 years.
