The new law, based on the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (in the final recommendations of the 6th periodic report of Uzbekistan on establishing separate criminal responsibility for domestic violence, separate administrative and criminal responsibility for domestic violence) states that if a husband or wife violates the rights of their spouse, insults, or threatens, deprives of meeting relatives, they will be administratively punished.
For example, if a person insults his spouse and insults his dignity, he will be fined 6 million soums, and if he beats her with malicious intent and inflicts serious bodily injury, he might be imprisoned for 12 years.
In Uzbekistan, in 2021-2022, law enforcement agencies received 72,000 complaints about discrimination in the family, more than 61,000 of them (85 percent) related to discrimination against women.
