Ukraine has received a large batch of onions from Kyrgyzstan after the ban on onion exports was lifted in early March 2023. The volume of the imported batch of onions is estimated at almost 150 tonnes, EastFruit reports.
The high-quality onions from Kyrgyzstan are being sold at a lower price than Ukrainian onions, making them an attractive option for importers.
Despite a recent wave of onion price declines, Ukraine still has relatively high onion prices, which are stimulating imports from various countries. In the first days of April 2023, Ukraine received large volumes of imported onions from nine countries, including Egypt, India, China, Lithuania, Moldova, the Netherlands, France, Poland, and Kyrgyzstan.
Kyrgyzstan is not a major exporter of onions and exports between 6,000 to 19,000 tonnes annually to countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus.
