The International Court of Justice of the United Nations has partially satisfied Iran's lawsuit against the United States regarding the freezing of foreign assets. Now Washington must pay compensation to Tehran, the UN press service informs.
According to the conclusion of the court, the United States violated its obligations under the 1955 friendship treaty between the countries by freezing Iran's foreign assets. At the same time, relations between Iran and the United States became hostile after the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and the United States decided to withdraw from the agreement only in 2018, after the introduction of a package of numerous sanctions.
The court ruled that Washington had frozen the assets of some Iranian companies before withdrawing from the friendship agreement, that is, paying compensation to Tehran for "illegal sanctions". The amount of compensation and the payment procedure should be decided by the countries themselves. If they cannot agree within the next two years, the judges will consider the matter separately.
The decisions of the UN International Court of Justice are binding and cannot be appealed. At the same time, the court does not have mechanisms to force countries to comply with these decisions. In the past, both the United States and Iran itself ignored other decisions of the UN court.
