The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wants to participate in the fight for the post of the new Secretary General of NATO when Jens Stoltenberg's mandate ends in September, The Sun newspaper reports citing sources.
According to the sources, some of the NATO member-states called von der Leyen to head the alliance as early as October. At the same time, her mandate as the chairman of the European Commission will end next year.
According to the publication, von der Leyen's appointment may be opposed by Eurosceptics, primarily by Great Britain. London wants to draw the attention of other NATO members to von der Leyen's poor performance during her tenure at the German Ministry of Defense during 2013-2019.
Prior to that, the media reported that Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Christy Freeland, and Great Britain's Defense Minister Ben Wallace were also considered candidates for the post of NATO Secretary General.
