Iraq’s Prime Minister Shia al-Sudani has directed authorities to ensure that Turkmen remains part of the languages used for official correspondence in Kirkuk, along with Arabic and Kurdish.
The Turkmen community of about 3mn people is the third largest ethnic group in Iraq after the Arabs and Kurds.
The Iraqi constitution stipulates that Turkmen will be the official language in administrative units where the Turkmen population, for example, in Kirkuk since Ottoman times, is concentrated.
