Turkmenistan has reopened the Bajgiran passenger terminal on its border with Iran, which was suspended three years ago due to the risk of a pandemic.
Ja’far Shahamat, the director of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Department of Iran’s northeastern Khorasan Razavi Province, told the IRNA news agency.
"The reopening of the terminal took place after an agreement between Tehran and Ashgabat to provide services to the passengers at the joint border as they did in the pre-pandemic era."
The total length of the Iran-Turkmenistan border is about 1.150 km. Checkpoints are located in the Iranian provinces of Golestan (Incheh-Borun) and Khorasan-Razavi (Sarakhs, Lotfabad, and Bajigiran).
Bajigiran, the closest to the Turkmen capital, was during the pandemic open for diplomatic visits only. Now they are gradually opening the way for business travelers and freight traffic.
The other day, Turkmenavtoulağları (Turkmen Highways) reported that ten Iranian trucks were allowed to pass through Bajigiran "to expand trade relations."
The trucks were not to weigh more than 20 tonnes, and their movement was to end in Ashgabat.
