The new administrative center of Akhal, Turkmenistan's central region - the city of Arkadag (Patron) - is being built 30km from Ashgabat.
The title is officially reserved for 65-year-old Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who ruled the country from February 2007 to March 2022.
He is now head of the People's Council (Khalk Maslakhaty), the country's highest representative body, and was recently awarded the official title of "National Leader."
He is personally inspecting the construction of this city. The provincial officials, previously based in the Anau locality, 8 km from the capital, are preparing to move to Arkadag.
On Friday, local media published a law granting the new settlement near the picturesque Kopet Dag mountains a special legal status - "city of state importance."
The document was signed by the incumbent leader Serdar Berdimuhamedov, son of Gurbanguly.
"The legal status of the city of Arkadag is established by its special importance as an administrative and territorial unit that demonstrates the success of Turkmenistan and the long-term development prospects of the country based on the centuries-old historical experience of the Turkmen people and modern trends in the international practice of state building," the law says.
A large mosque, a circus, the International Academy of Horse Breeding, a historical museum, a drama theatre, a wedding palace, hundreds of cottages and apartment buildings, and a children's recreation and rehabilitation center are being built in the new regional center for 70,000 future residents.
Innovative city technologies using solar and wind energy are being introduced in Arcadag. For example, public transport will run on electricity, and artificial intelligence will control street lighting and vehicular traffic.
