Speaking on behalf of Uzbekistan at the UN 2023 Water Conference on March 23 in New York, Saida Mirziyoyeva raised topics important for the Aral Sea region, UzA has reported. The event on global water crisis is being held for the first time after a 45-year hiatus as some five bn people of the worldwide population may suffer from water shortage by 2050.
In particular, Saida Mirziyoyeva delivered a speech about the negative impact of the Aral Sea disaster, the country's large-scale efforts to mitigate it, and collaboration with the global community in this regard.
In particular, Saida Mirziyoyeva emphasized that Muynak on the Aral coast used to be a port city with large production capacities; later, the balance was disturbed. The dead shores of the sea became a graveyard of ships, and she read lines from a poem of the famous Karakalpak poet Ibrayim Yusupov, describing how the sea turns into a desert in the blink of an eye.
When talking about the measures implemented by Uzbekistan, it was said that over $14mn had been allotted to boost the region, improve its economic potential, ensure the public health of its population, and create green parks in the area.
The tenacity, hard work, and creativity of the people of Karakalpakstan were specially recognized. Furthermore, it was emphasized that women especially need intense care and support and the need to expand opportunities for them.
Earlier, it was reported that Germany would allocate $700,000 for the Aral Sea region.
