According to the Global Terrorism Index-2023 (GTI), the situation in Central Asia shows positive dynamics ranking Uzbekistan 70th (second) followed by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan which share the 93rd place. Tajikistan is seeded 50th showing better results than any other CA country.
Afghanistan ranks first in the ranking in terms of the number of deaths for the fourth year in a row.
After the Taliban took over Afghanistan, ISIS became the "most active terrorist group" and killed 422 people in 2022. About 67 per cent of terrorism-related deaths are attributed to ISIS.
The index is calculated on the basis of data on the number of terrorist attacks and casualties since 2007. The worst terrorist situation is in Afghanistan. According to GTI, 633 terrorist attacks were recorded in the country. 63 percent of attacks and 74 percent of deaths occurred along the border with Pakistan.
Uzbekistan ranked 125th in the 2016 index and 132nd in 2019.
