The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the global risk of cholera as very high, due to the increase in the number of epidemics and their geographical expansion.
"Given the current situation, including the increasing number of outbreaks and their geographic expansion, as well as the lack of vaccines and other resources, WHO assesses the global risk as very high," the WHO report said.
According to the organization, the global situation has worsened since the last cholera outbreak on February 11, 2023 with outbreaks reported in four more countries.
"Currently, a total of 24 countries are reporting such cases," the document says.
WHO has previously announced that more than 1bn people across 43 countries of the world are at risk of cholera. According to reports, poverty, conflicts, and natural disasters are leading to a rise in the number of diseases.
In December 2022, the organization reported about shortage of cholera vaccines, saying that the world stockpile of cholera vaccines is "empty or very low".
