Turkmenistan will hold elections to the national parliament (Mejlis) on March 26, 2023, and registration of 258 candidates was completed the day before, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.
According to the Constitution, a Turkmen citizen who has reached the age of twenty-five by election day and has permanently resided in Turkmenistan for the previous ten years may be elected to parliament.
The key powers of parliament: approve the state budget; appoints elections of the president and deputies; decide on the holding of national referenda; decide on changes in the state border and administrative-territorial division; and ratify and denounce international treaties.
