A temporary restriction on the export of onions has been established in Uzbekistan for 4 months effective from January 1, 2023. This was reported by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The authorities in Uzbekistan are scrambling to undertake necessary measures to meet consumer demand and ensure food safety.
Regions confirm that there are 87,000 tons of onion reserves in the regions and 232,000 tons in households, totalling 319,000 tons of onion products. This indicates the presence of onion reserves in the area.
According to the experts, 26.5 thousand tons of onions are needed in addition to the existing stock as part of the consumption demand of the population.
Negotiations are underway with industry partners in foreign countries regarding the import of these products.
In 2022, onions were planted on 91,100 hectares of all categories of farms in Uzbekistan, 1.9 million tons of which were grown, and 665,000 tons of autumn crops were grown in August-September.
1.2 million tons of the cultivated onion crop was directed to the consumption of the population, 203 thousand tons to export, 93.2 thousand tons to reserves, 210 thousand tons to catering and processing enterprises. Natural losses amounted to 228,000 tons.
According to estimates, from January 20 to April 30, 2023, the population's demand for onions according to medical standards will be 346,000 tons on average.
