Uzbekistan expands highway network as traffic volume projected to exceed 80,000 vehicles by 2030

Uzbekistan expands highway network as traffic volume projected to exceed 80,000 vehicles by 2030

The traffic volume on some of Uzbekistan’s major highways may exceed 80,000 vehicles per day by 2030. Currently, 25% of the country’s international roads are operating under heavy load. The Tashkent-Samarkand highway, for example, is designed for 32,000 vehicles per day but carries around 45,000, leading to severe traffic congestion. At times, travel between the two cities can take up to six hours.

To address these challenges, the president of Uzbekistan was briefed on the progress of major highway construction projects aimed at easing traffic and strengthening logistics networks.

A presidential resolution issued on October 10, 2023, set the framework for developing modern highways, prioritizing convenience for the public and boosting economic connectivity.

One of the most significant projects is the Tashkent-Andijan Expressway, a 314-kilometer road designed with the participation of the World Bank. In January, an international tender for its construction was announced, attracting interest from over 30 reputable foreign companies. Once completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Tashkent and Andijan from five hours to three. Additionally, it is expected to increase Uzbekistan’s GDP by 2.6% and cut traffic accidents by 40%.

Another project focuses on constructing an additional road connecting Tashkent and Samarkand. Its feasibility study was developed with the participation of foreign experts. The new road will span approximately 300 kilometers, reducing travel time between the two cities from 4.5 hours to 2.5 hours. It is also expected to ease congestion on the existing highway significantly.

Both of these new roads will meet modern standards, offering alternative routes and various paid services for drivers and passengers. Local construction companies will also have the opportunity to participate in the projects, supporting the national economy.

During a recent briefing, the Minister of Transport provided updates on the status of these projects. Discussions focused on accelerating geodetic work, preparing construction sites, and securing funding and contractors.
