Uzbekistan's Ministry of Ecology, Environment, and Climate Change has responded to reports of plans to transfer over 31,000 trees and shrubs in the Bukhara region and 21,800 trees in the Surkhandarya region due to road reconstruction.
The Ministry has called previous reports incorrect, clarifying that the trees were not planned to be cut down.
On July 6, the government of the Bukhara region proposed a project to transplant 31,371 trees and shrubs to empty sections in the surrounding areas for the reconstruction of the highway A-380 "Guzar-Bukhara-Nukus-Beyneu" (between 150,228 km). Similarly, on July 7, the government of Surkhandarya requested assistance in replanting 21,803 trees on sections of roads due to reconstruction.
The Ministry confirmed that it had received instructions to submit proposals to the commission within a week to transfer the said trees without causing environmental damage. The governmental department emphasized that the destruction or damage of plant world objects is considered a severe crime and reminded the initiators of these projects of the significant role of these trees and shrubs in reducing the impact of dust and sand storms. The Ministry expressed gratitude for the media's active position in protecting trees and preserving ecological balance. Also, it introduced a new mechanism for considering such requests by organizing public hearings on the issue of cutting down or replanting trees.
The Ecological Party of Uzbekistan has reported that it will transmit proposals to state authorities to take measures to save trees and eliminate cases that pose a danger to the environment.
Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Odiljon Razziyev stressed that no construction should be carried out at the expense of nature and suggested sending a deputy's request for discussion.
Earlier, in July, Daryo reported that MP Rasul Kusherbayev had assured residents living near the Scientific Institute of Silk, which is set to relocate from Tashkent to Andijan, that all 18,000 trees will remain unharmed. The concerns expressed by the local community regarding the preservation of the surrounding trees have been taken into consideration and addressed accordingly.
