A step was taken in enhancing cooperation between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, as two important documents were signed by the foreign ministers of both countries on January 27.
The agreements were reached during negotiations between Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov. The documents, which include a joint cooperation Program for 2025-2026 and a protocol on the inventory and improvement of the contractual and legal framework, are seen as vital to the future of bilateral relations.
Minister Saidov emphasized the importance of these agreements in deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations, calling it a "highest priority" for both countries. He noted that the leadership of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan had built a "solid and long-term foundation" for continuing the positive trajectory of their relationship.
The discussions between the ministers touched on various aspects of bilateral cooperation, with plans for intensive exchanges set to take place at all levels and across all sectors in 2025. Additionally, both parties exchanged notes of support for each other's candidates in international organizations.
Rashid Meredov also met with President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev the same day. The event centered around the development of Uzbek-Turkmen relations, focusing on strengthening their friendship, good neighborliness, and strategic partnership.
Special attention was given to creating a new comprehensive agenda for multifaceted cooperation, including preparations for upcoming high-level visits, the Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of the region, and summits in the Central Asia+ format.
Trade between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan is rapidly growing, exceeding $1.1bn in 2024. The two countries are jointly developing the Shovot-Toshovuz border trade zone. Cooperation continues to strengthen in industrial, energy, transport, logistics, agriculture, and water use sectors, with expanding interregional ties and cultural exchanges.
