Kazakhstan has sent its first shipment of oil from the Kashagan field to the port of Baku for further transportation through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline.
The oil, loaded on the Kazakh tanker Taraz, departed from the port of Aktau and is now en route to Baku, where it will be transported via the BTC pipeline system to the Mediterranean Sea.
Previously, Kazakhstan shipped oil from the Tengiz field via BTC. However, the new shipment marks a significant expansion of Kazakhstan's oil export routes.
In March 2024, Kazakhstan signed an agreement to increase the annual oil transit volume through BTC from 1.5mn to 2.2mn tonnes. The first shipments from Kashagan are part of this agreement.
KMG Kashagan B.V. is the oil exporter for the Kashagan oil, with Kazakhstan's Energy Ministry also revealing plans to transport 1.5mn tonnes of oil via BTC in 2025.
Kazakhstan's commitment to diversifying its oil export routes via BTC began in 2023, when an agreement was signed between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and KazMunayGas to ship 1.5mn tonnes of oil per year. Since then, Kazakhstan has shipped 1.057mn tonnes of oil in 2023 and 1.4mn tonnes in 2024 from Aktau to Azerbaijan for subsequent export via BTC.
