President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed proposals aimed at increasing youth involvement in sports across Uzbekistan, on November 21. These initiatives form part of the broader goals outlined in the "Uzbekistan - 2030" Strategy and the Year of Support for Youth and Business state program. The measures aim to provide greater opportunities for the younger generation and promote a culture of physical activity and healthy competition nationwide.
Currently, more than 10mn people are engaged in mass sports throughout Uzbekistan. Regular competitions are organized across all regions, including schools and workplaces, to foster an active lifestyle. The state program has outlined several key steps to develop and popularize team sports, emphasizing grassroots participation and institutional support.
One of the proposed measures involves the introduction of competitions such as the “Mahalla League” and “School League,” which aim to promote team sports at the community and school levels. Similarly, sports clubs are to be established at state universities to encourage inter-university competitions like the “Student League,” “Minister’s Cup,” and “Rector’s Cup.” National leagues in team sports will also receive support, while local administrations will oversee the creation of regional sports clubs. To identify and nurture talented young athletes, the ERP Sport electronic platform will play a central role in monitoring and selecting promising individuals.
The proposals also include additional measures to encourage regular sports activities among young people. For instance, Thursdays are set to be designated as “Physical Culture and Sports Day,” encouraging routine participation in physical activity. Coaches and staff at sports schools will receive bonuses based on the number of participants they engage and the results achieved in their programs. Institutions will gradually specialize in specific sports to improve training quality and ensure the efficient use of existing infrastructure.
A new role of trainer-selector will be introduced in sports schools, with each trainer assigned responsibility for up to five mahallas or educational institutions. Trainers who establish sports clubs within local neighborhoods will also receive additional incentives to encourage community-level engagement in sports.
