At Roland Garros on August 8, two members of Team GB’s medical support staff saved the life of Tulkin Kilichev, the head coach of the Uzbekistan boxing team, the Guardians reported. Kilichev collapsed due to a cardiac arrest while celebrating Hasanboy Dusmatov’s gold medal win in the warm-up area.
Team GB’s doctor, Harj Singh, and physio, Robbie Lillis, acted quickly in the emergency response. Singh began CPR on Kilichev, and Lillis followed with the emergency trauma bag and used a defibrillator to administer a shock.
Subsequently, Kilichev was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition. Team GB’s medical team undergoes training, including pitch-side trauma courses at the UK Sports Institute, to prepare for such situations.
“It was obviously a bit of a rush of adrenaline at that time kind of managing the situation,” he said. “I’m grateful to be able to play a part in hopefully helping someone survive,” Lillis reflected.
