The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, met with Mafalda Duarte, the Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund, during his visit to the city of Baku for the COP29 summit. The discussion centered on expanding collaboration on climate-related projects and programs aimed at addressing climate change impacts.
During the meeting, President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of further strengthening cooperation with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to enhance the capacity of Uzbek organizations in adapting to climate change and mitigating its effects. The president particularly appreciated the support provided by the fund in developing national adaptation plans for the country.
Currently, the portfolio of joint projects between Uzbekistan and the GCF amounts to $160mn, covering key areas such as water resource management, renewable energy development, and green financing. Additionally, two regional projects valued at $5bn and three national projects totaling $500mn are in the pipeline, further strengthening the partnership.
The discussions also focused on expanding cooperation in innovative greening initiatives and sustainable land management practices, particularly in the Aral Sea region. This includes improving the ecological and social conditions of the area, with a focus on sustainability and environmental restoration.
Both sides agreed to continue their efforts in implementing impactful projects that will contribute to Uzbekistan's climate resilience and long-term environmental goals.
