The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has escalated its repression of women, now forbidding them from speaking openly not only to men but also to one another. This directive was reported by Bild, citing Khalid Hanafi, the Taliban’s Minister of Virtue.
According to the announcement, women must avoid situations where their voices could be heard by other older women. This measure extends to prohibiting women from reading the Quran aloud in front of each other. The new restrictions reflect the regime's ongoing efforts to silence women's voices and impose strict controls over their behavior.
The United Nations has condemned these latest measures, expressing deep concern over the continued erosion of women's rights in Afghanistan. The interim government unveiled a comprehensive set of "virtue and vice" laws in September, spanning 114 pages and containing 35 articles. Among the new rules are bans on women singing or reading in public and strict requirements for modest dress. Additionally, women are instructed to avoid making eye contact with strange men.
In response to the Taliban’s discriminatory practices, Canada, Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands are preparing to file a lawsuit against the regime at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Advocates for the suit argue that, even if the Taliban reject the ICJ's jurisdiction, the court's ruling could deter other nations from establishing diplomatic ties with the current Afghan government.
UN member states are bound to comply with the decisions of the International Criminal Court, and the involved countries are hopeful for a diplomatic resolution. However, if negotiations falter, they are prepared to pursue the case in court.
The Taliban's restrictions on women encompass a range of oppressive measures, including:
- Prohibiting Afghan women from working in UN offices.
- Forbidding women from sewing clothes for men.
- Restricting women's access to male doctors and hospitals without a male guardian.
- Banning women from visiting amusement parks.
- Denying families and women access to restaurants with gardens or outdoor spaces.
- Prohibiting the broadcasting of commercials featuring women's voices.
- Forbidding women from bargaining with sellers in markets.
