At a conference organized by the United Nations in Doha, the Taliban movement expressed hope that the financial and trade sanctions imposed on Kabul by the international community would be lifted soon. The head of the Afghan delegation, Zabihullah Mujahid, made this announcement during the event aimed at discussing the future of Afghanistan, TASS disclosed.
Mujahid emphasized that Afghans have established a system designed to foster positive relations with the international community. However, he lamented that instead of support, Afghanistan has faced sanctions and restrictions.
"Afghans created a system aimed at developing positive relations with the world, but in response they faced sanctions and restrictions," he stated.
He urged that political disagreements should not escalate to the point where powerful countries leverage their influence to exert pressure on the Afghan populace in matters of security, politics, and economy. Kabul, according to Mujahid, is eager to cooperate positively with other nations and enhance diplomatic relations.
Interestingly, Mujahid's speech at the conference notably avoided addressing the contentious issue of gender inequality in Afghanistan, which has been exacerbated by the Taliban's restrictions on women's rights and the ban on girls' education.
The two-day conference, which commenced on June 30 in Doha, is the third meeting under the UN's auspices aimed at reaching a consensus among key stakeholders regarding Afghanistan's development trajectory. The UN has been facilitating these discussions to chart a path forward for the war-torn nation, which remains under heavy international scrutiny.
The sanctions, which were imposed following the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, have severely impacted Afghanistan's economy. The international community has been reluctant to lift these sanctions without notable improvements in human rights, particularly regarding the treatment of women and girls.
Earlier Daryo reported that the Taliban have insisted that Afghanistan's participation in the UN meeting in Doha be limited to male representatives and that discussions on women's rights be excluded from the agenda.
