Since August 2021, the U.S. has been the leading provider of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, with contributions surpassing $2.1bn, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Katherine Brucker announced in response to OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid's report. This aid is aimed at alleviating the dire conditions faced by the Afghan population.
Secretary General Schmid delivered a comprehensive report on the ongoing economic and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and their impacts on regional security. The report stresses the severe hardships faced by the Afghan people, particularly women and girls, and the broader implications for Afghanistan’s stability and its neighboring countries.
Secretary General Schmid emphasized that the current situation in Afghanistan not only undermines the security within the country but also poses a threat to regional stability. The humanitarian and economic challenges have been particularly dire, affecting the most vulnerable populations, including women and girls.
In response, the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting stability in Afghanistan through both diplomacy and substantial humanitarian aid.
During discussions with the Taliban, the U.S. has made it clear that its engagement is guided by the need to uphold human rights and meet specific commitments. The U.S. continues to stress the importance of rebuilding Afghanistan’s economy, respecting human rights without discrimination, and preventing the use of Afghan territory by terrorist groups.
In support of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and its efforts to address regional security issues, the United States has contributed nearly $11mn to fourteen projects under the Response to the Implications of Afghanistan for the OSCE Region (RIAOR) framework.
This funding supports key initiatives, including the Border Management Staff College and Women’s Resource Centers in Tajikistan, the OSCE Academy in Bishkek, and other projects aimed at enhancing border security and combating human trafficking in Central Asia.
The United States also commended the efforts of Central Asian colleagues working to educate Afghan girls, recognizing their crucial role in addressing the crisis. Looking ahead, the U.S. is committed to continuing collaboration with the OSCE Secretariat and Central Asian participating States to support these initiatives and effectively address regional security challenges.
